Fortis BC Applies For Smart Meters

Friday, July 27, 2012 - 10:06 AM

Fortis BC has now applied for the installation of smart metres in our area.

It must first be approved by the BC Utilities Commission before the exchange of approximately 115,000 manually read metres with advanced ones.

Corporate Communications Advisor Neal Pobran believes the regulatory process will be going on for most of 2012, with a decision to come down in 2013.  He says he can't speak for what the commission's process will be as far as a timeline, but they are thinking meters will be exchanged in 2014 and the project will be completed by about 2015.

Some residents have voiced privacy and health concerns about BC Hydro's smart meters - Pobran says customers can provide their input at the BCUC website.  He says the project will save money, improve the ablity to restore power outages and help reduce electricity theft.
