"Dark Day For Farmers":Atamanenko

Wednesday, August 1, 2012 - 3:42 PM

It is a dark day for western Canadian farmers.

This from our local New Democrat MP Alex Atamanenko regarding the formal end of the Canadian Wheat Board monopoly. Farmers are now able to sell wheat and barley to any company of their choosing.

Atamanenko says the monopoly was successful in providing good, stable world markets for local farmers. He says that stability is lost with deregulation and while prices may be high at the moment they may need that bloc marketing power if prices decline in future.

He says the directors elected to the Wheat Board voted unanimously to keep the monopoly in place, and yet the government has overruled the democratic process.

The Conservatives say western Canadian farmers should have "marketing freedom" for their product.
