Decision To Strike Monday "Disappointing":Newell
The president of the Nelson and District Teachers Association says Wednesday night's strike vote sends a clear message to government.
Tom Newell is speaking after 75% of our province's 41,000 teachers cast a ballot, with 87% in favor of escalating job action.
But Newell admits the decision to take strike action is the worst possible outcome, and he acknowledges the significant and immediate strain on parents to find child care for three days beginning Monday of next week.
Both School District 8 and School District 20 are asking parents not to send their children to school Monday through Wednesday of next week; they say schools will not have the requisite staffing levels to ensure childrens' safety.
Teachers in the Kootenay Lake School District will not be picketing, but rather setting up what he calls a pamphlet line to disburse information.
