Nelson Group Optimistic About Movie House Proposal

Tuesday, May 15, 2012 - 9:57 AM

A volunteer group is edging closer to finalising their concept for the renovation of Nelson's Civic Theatre movie house.

Cindy Sherry is one of many people working on the non-profit concept. She's not giving many details but says they want to have the venue functioning again as soon as possible and not just the digital projection side of things. She says they're working on expanding the all-important concession area which could include a "uniquely" Nelson food element along with the usual soda, candy and popcorn.

Sherry adds they've been shown how over 200 new seats left behind during the previous unsuccessful attempt to renovate the venue could be modified to fit well in the lower section. It's not clear how the mezzanine level would work.

A complete restoraton of the public building could cost $1 million but Sherry says their plan is not that expensive although she can't give costs at this stage.

The deadline for the city's request for proposals is the end of May. One group has already put forward a plan to convert the space into an athletic club featuring squash courts and a climbing wall.
