Atamanenko Responds to Mulcair Comment Backlash

Thursday, May 17, 2012 - 9:52 AM

Our local MP is defending his leader in the wake of harsh criticism from western provincial leaders.

NDP leader Thomas Mulcair recently stated western resources were driving up the dollar artificially at the expense of eastern manufacturing. It's a comment BC Finance Minister Kevin Falcon has called "ignorant."

But Southern Interior New Democrat  Alex Atamanenko says Mulcair is in tune with western issues and is speaking against raw resource exports. He says there needs to be more value-added manufacturing from the resource industry whether its oil or logs and not just "an export at all costs approach."

Atamanenko says Mulcair's stance won't make his job tougher as a western MP adding he believes there is a growing number of people across the country in favor of Canadian manufacturing.

He says the BC Liberals reaction to Mulcair's comments is an attack to counter rising provincial NDP popularity in our province.
