Local Teachers' Union Disagrees With Board Approach

Thursday, May 17, 2012 - 10:28 AM

The president of the Nelson and District Teachers Association says the 19 job losses announced by the local board will impact students and teacher workload.

Tom Newell disagrees with the Kootenay Lake board's decision to cut jobs now and use the next few years of special funding protection for declining enrolment in other areas. He says the cuts will lead to pressures for teachers and classrooms in areas such as special needs, counselling and library hours.

The board says it was important to get on an economically sustainable footing because teacher numbers have not fallen in line with student decreases in recent years as they balanced a budget that featured a $1.3 million shortfall.

Newell says teachers have consistently faced the brunt of cuts rather than administrators.
