Trail Gets Fibre Optic Money

Thursday, June 14, 2012 - 1:14 PM

Trail has secured $50,000 of new funding to expand its downtown fibre-optic network.

City councillor Gord Derosa explains the money comes from the Southern Interior Development Initiative Trust (SIDIT) who provide grants based on increased economic opportunity. He says this will allow the city to build its fibre network outwards by bringing businesses in the downtown core online with the high speed/high load digital capacity.

Derosa is confident the city's fibre plan will serve the downtown well in the long run even in light of recent discussion at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities convention on the possibility of having satellite internet in rural areas in the future.

The city also has wireless hotspots at key areas in the downtown including at city hall and the Trail Memorial Centre.
