Nelson Clamps Down On Sandwich Boards

Thursday, June 14, 2012 - 1:33 PM

Nelson's funky and ecclectic downtown may have gone a bit too far when it comes to signage.

There are so many unapproved sandwich boards cluttering the sidewalks the city has decided to introduce a policy that will enforce the payment of a $55 fee , certain guidelines on design and how many signs can be in a given location.

Of a hundred signs recently reviewed by the city only seven were officially approved. The city will now be able to remove any signs that don't make the grade.

Councillor Deb Kozak can't say if the new rules will reduce the clutter but she feels the enforced regulations and closer monitoring will give businesses a chance to decide if they really need a sign at all.

The city figures some of the signs are a danger to pedestrians or there's so many that it's taking away from the charm and look of the downtown.
