Greenwood Faced With Dam Decision

Friday, June 29, 2012 - 2:55 PM

It appears Providence Dam near Greenwood will be decommisioned unless the city is prepared to pay liability costs.

The province has declared the 6-hectare man-made dam on Marshall Lake "high risk and high consequence" and says it will drain it unless Greenwood takes it over.

Mayor Nipper Kettle says that would be a burden for local taxpayers.

Some people in the community want to preserve the dam for recreational use and wildfire control.

But kettle says it's a money issue and he's still awaiting word from the municipal insurance authority for a quote.

The province needs an answer by July 13th.
