Crews Keeping An Eye On Tailings Pond Near Salmo

Wednesday, July 4, 2012 - 1:44 PM

Officials are trying to assess the damaged Tailings Pond near Salmo that "could" burst its retaining walls and flood across Highway 3.

The recent heavy rains have damaged the integrity of the facility and it's not clear if and how the dam would break and cascade across the Highway.

The RDCK's Jim Gustafson says they're not sure "how catastrophic" a burst could be.  He says they have Traffic Control Crews on Highway 3 around the clock keeping an eye on the Tailings Pond.  Traffic will be stopped if they see any movement.

Engineers are assessing the damage and water is slowly being released from the site.

The Pond contains water contaminated with various metals and toxic elements from the old HB Mine Site.
