Kootenay Lake School Board To Cut 19 Jobs
Wednesday, May 16, 2012 - 2:24 PM
The chair of the Kootenay Lake school board says now is the time to get the district on a financially sustainable footing.
Mel Joy is speaking of the 19 teachers jobs that will be lost to help balance a budget that was facing a $1.3 million shortfall due mainly to declining enrolment.
She says the teacher count has not declined with student numbers and the ministry's special funding protection to help ease the financial transition is set to run out in the coming years.
Joy says most of the 19 teacher job losses with be through attrition , meaning those who are retiring or going on leave won't be replaced.
