Skier Killed in Avalanche Near Kaslo

Friday, February 3, 2012 - 4:08 PM

A skier has been killed after being buried in an avalanche on Meadow Mountain, near Kaslo.

The man was in a group with eleven other people who became caught up in the slide when it struck at about 11 a-m Friday morning.

RCMP Staff Sargeant Dan Seibel says the group were part of a sold-out tour with local cat-ski operator Selkirk Wilderness Skiing, adding the victim was airlifted to hospital in Nelson.

The name of the deceased man has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

RCMP and the BC Coroners' Service are continuing their investigation.

Selkirk Wilderness Skiing spokesperson Keith Davis says the group was going down a run one-by-one, and the second guest in line triggered the slide.

The two guides who were in the group located the man, who was wearing an avalanche transceiver, but were unable to resuscitate him.

The other skiers in the group have since returned to the resort lodge.

Davis confirms Friday's avalanche has resulted in the first fatality in Selkirk Wilderness Skiing's 37 years of operation.
