Dredging Possibility Highlights Potential Concerns

Friday, October 19, 2012 - 1:07 PM

How would residents along the Brilliant headpond be effected by dredging of the Grohman Narrows on Kootenay River near Nelson?

That's a concern of Area I Director Andy Davidoff who has constituents between the Brilliant Dam and Crescent Valley area.  Davidoff says his understanding is that if Grohman Narrows is dredged it will increase flows.  He wonders whether that increase could be controlled by the dams below in the event of extremely high water levels like we saw this year.

Davidoff is speaking following BC Hydro's confirmation that bed rock drilling will be conducted in the spring to help determine how big a project and how much it would cost to excavate the Narrows.

The job would ease flooding concerns in Kootenay Lake and has power generation potential.  Davidoff says he'd expect meaningful public consultation and technical data before any project got the green light.
