City Cautious On Nelson Civic Theatre Plan

Tuesday, October 23, 2012 - 3:13 PM

Nelson's City Manager is being cautious about the ambitious $2.7 million plan by a local non-profit society to restore the Civic Theatre as a 3-plex movie house and performance space.

Kevin Cormack says for council to approve the development in the city-owned building they would need to have assurances regarding funds raised and what phases of the project can indeed be achieved. He says the city doesn't want a repeat of what happened last time when an inadequately funded group came along, made changes but couldn't finish the job.

The city would be prepared to offer rent relief and a long term lease (possibly 20 years) because of the extensive improvements the society would be making to a city asset that is in need of upgrades.

As a first phase the society says two screens could be built within ten months with an intial cost of $1.5 million.
